Gina Carano, Disney has settled a wrongful termination lawsuit with former Star Wars actress Gina Carano, officially closing the book on a dispute that has been brewing for more than three years.
In a statement shared Thursday, Carano said:
“I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the Force… I hope to make you proud. I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.”
The 43-year-old actress, who played Cara Dune on the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian, was fired in February 2021 after Disney objected to a controversial social media post she made. Carano has long maintained that she was dismissed because of her conservative political views, arguing that she was wrongfully discriminated against.
A former MMA fighter, Carano has been outspoken on social media about her opposition to Black Lives Matter, COVID-19 lockdowns, and what she has described as “transgender dogma.” The post that ultimately led to her firing featured a historical photo of a Jewish woman being beaten in Lwow during the Nazi occupation of World War II. Carano compared the hatred directed at conservatives in the U.S. to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust — a statement that sparked widespread outrage.
While Disney and Lucasfilm have not commented publicly on the specifics of the settlement, the resolution brings an end to one of the entertainment industry’s most publicized free speech disputes in recent years.
Carano’s portrayal of Cara Dune had been a fan favorite, and her firing ignited debates about cancel culture, artistic freedom, and political bias in Hollywood.
With the legal battle now behind her, Carano says she’s ready to move forward and focus on her artistic career — though whether she will return to mainstream Hollywood projects remains to be seen.

“Jews were beaten in the streets — not by Nazi soldiers, but by their neighbors, even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that before Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government had already encouraged neighbors to hate them simply for being Jewish. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” Carano wrote at the time.
Following the post, Disney terminated her role in the hit Star Wars spinoff and accused her of “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities.” Shortly after, her talent agency, UTA, also dropped her.
In 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit against Disney seeking punitive damages, alleging wrongful termination and discrimination. She also requested that the studio recast her as Cara Dune. The case gained additional attention when Elon Musk backed her efforts, as part of his initiative to fund legal battles for anyone who believed they had been wrongfully discriminated against by their employer over content posted on his platform, X.
Disney moved to have the case dismissed in April 2024, claiming it had a First Amendment right to avoid associating its brand with Carano’s views. The actress publicly criticized the company in response, saying Disney had proven it would “fire you if you say anything they disagree with” and accusing her former employer of misrepresenting her words.
On Thursday, the legal dispute came to an end. In its settlement statement, Disney reversed course from its earlier stance, describing Carano as “always well respected” by her colleagues and expressing a desire to collaborate with her again “in the near future.”

“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the matters in her pending lawsuit against us. Ms. Carano was always highly regarded by her directors, co-stars, and crew. She worked diligently to hone her craft and treated everyone she worked with kindly and respectfully. Now that this lawsuit is resolved, we look forward to exploring opportunities to collaborate with Ms. Carano again in the near future,” Disney said in a statement.
On Thursday, Carano posted a brief but pointed message on X: “… and the truth shall set you free.”
