Hey StyleLeeders! TGIF! This past weekend I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Miss Jamaica World 2015 Pageant. Alongside being a spectator, I was treated to an ‘all-access backstage pass’ to cover the pageant. Attending a beauty pageant is always a lovely and thrilling experience. Now, I know there are many people out there who think it’s all about being plastic, beautiful and walking around on a stage…but it really is so much more than that. Come to think of it, the crown and sash are the materialistic highlights of the entire competition. I’m not saying these competitions are perfect but its beautiful when you see just how excited the friends and family of each contestant are. It makes you realize how hard each one of these young women has worked towards this goal of representing their country—& that’s a remarkable thing.
Usually when I attend pageants I’m all about glitz and glamour but this time around I went classic in all black with just a small splash of colour on my lips. Now I went with black for a few reasons. Firstly because black is perhaps the greatest symbol of pure elegance and chic and secondly, black is always a suitable solution for a safe and comfortable look on those days you can’t find anything to wear. Yup! I didn’t have a damn thing to wear, so I wore classic black as a classic ‘fall back’.
Although I played it safe, I avoided the outfit from looking boring and simple by balancing the proportions and combinations of my look by staying fitted on top and loose & flared down bottom. Finally, I counterbalanced the plain and monochrome black with a pop of pink lipstick and a pearl statement necklace as a nice way of putting my femininity out there more explicitly.
