So if you’ve been following me on snapchat (@natashaleeds) then you probably watched my entire experience at the dermatologist last week when I went to get my very first microdermabrasion treatment.
The weeks following up to me getting the procedure, I visited my dermatologist and shared my concerns of the texture on my skin. Immediately she recommended that I do a non-invasive procedure like multiderm-microdermabrasion. In all honesty I had no idea what it was, but I instantly agreed to do it because I have so much trust in her. I’ve been going to Dr. Campbell for over 5 years and she’s who helped to clear up my acne on both my face and back. So without hesitation I set up an appointment for the multiderm-microdermabrasion.
But first, if you’re wondering what multiderm-microdermabrasion actually is, don’t worry, you are not alone. Prior to going to Dermatology Solutions, I really knew little to nothing about it. Multiderm microdermabrasion is a procedure which uses patient-specific soft metal paddles, along with vibration, to gently exfoliate the skin in a massage-like manner. It typically is best suited for skin concerns like, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin texture, enlarged pores, acne scaring and age spots.
So here’s what it was like to actually experience microdermabrasion. Walking into Dermatology Solutions, I was a little nervous that after our session I would walk out bruised and red, but my anxiety whisked away as soon as I got there. Dermatology Solutions is an incredibly serene place, filled aromatherapy scents and decor that is begging to be Instagrammed or at least relaxed in. I was met by Nurse Hunter who explained to me what to expect during and after the procedure while also answering any additional questions or concerns I had.
Once in the room, I lay on what looked like a masseuse’s bed and Nurse Hunter went straight to it. She first cleansed and prepped my skin while Dr. Campbell set up the microdermabrasion instrument for my procedure. As I lay there a little anxious, waiting for Dr. Campbell to place the metal paddles against my skin I started to question whether I made the right decision or not. The tool itself looked a little ‘gimmicky’ and all of a sudden I was doubting the entire thing.
One things for sure, once she started I immediately felt relaxed. The metal paddles vibrated and pulsated against my skin, while it sloughed off the top layer of my skin that had been congested. It literally felt like a facial massage and I didn’t want it to stop.
Midway through my very soothing ‘facial massage’, Nurse Hunter applied a special moisturizer to my skin and then used the microdermabrasion tool to further infuse the cream into my skin. This greatly increased my skin’s absorption of the cream while also revealing brighter, glowing skin.
Once done, I remember Dr. Campbell entering the room and handing me a mirror. I took a deep breath and wondered whether or not I would I emerge with baby soft skin? The answer—YES! My face was flushed but GLOWING! The incredible thing about this treatment is that, as much as I loved getting a facial massage while laying motionless for 20 minutes, with nothing to do but be with my thoughts, I didn’t know how different my skin would actually look or feel afterward. After all, multiderm-microdermabrasion is non-invasive—this isn’t the type of thing that involves extractions or scrubs, so how major could the change be? Pretty Major!
My skin concern was never about a bad breakout but instead texture. Without makeup my texture issues were barely noticeable but with makeup it was very obvious. And whenever I rubbed my fingers across my cheeks I could feel small, tiny raises against my skin. Well, bless Dr. Campbells soul for introducing multiderm-microdermabrasion to me. My skin immediately felt softer than it ever had before; I couldn’t stop running my fingers lightly over it for days after. And while I had a rosy flush in the hours that followed the treatment, within a few hours my skin was calm and I was left with incredibly clear, texture and redness-free skin for days after.
I can’t express enough just how happy I am with my results. It’s always a beautiful feeling when you’re happy with your skin, to the point that makeup—specifically foundation—has become an afterthought. I’m now a total believer in the power of the multiderm microdermabrasion and if my pocket allows I plan on doing this every other month ♥
While filming the entire procedure on SnapChat I received loads of questions from those who were tuned in, and a very common one was whether or not it would help with acne. Though it can help with mild acne with blackheads or whiteheads it is not ideal for active eczema or acne where there are pustules and inflamed tender bumps on the skin.
I also think it’s best you first see a dermatologist and have them assess your skin because they may have another procedure better suited for your skin type and concerns. Case in point…my younger sister Danielle came with me to only help me document the process but also with the intention of doing the same procedure because I suggested that she should. However when Dr. Campbell saw her skin she suggested another procedure for her and put her on a specific skin care regimen for her personal skin concerns.
That said, I highly recommend you make an appointment to see your dermatologist or aesthetician for a consultation. If you happen to be in the Montego Bay area, please give Dermatology Solutions a try. I’ve been going to her for YEARS and I strongly believe in her. If you do pay her a visit, tell her Natasha sent you, hehe.
