Hey NaturalLeeders!!! Four words to best describe the summer months that just passed—Holy Freakn’ Heat Wave! I think I’m best known for rocking the wash & go but this past summer has been so hot and steamy I can count the number of times I’ve worn a wash & go on one hand. As much as I love wearing my curls wild and free it’s not always practical, especially on a dreadfully hot day. So I turned to another hair style that saved me from this insane heat over the last few months.

The Top Knot Bun! It is a simple yet chic hairstyle and I have officially labeled it as my quintessential summer staple. Plus, this sleek, high-bun somehow always seems fitting for any occasion. Summer may be over but I plan on wearing this chic hairstyle into the fall months ahead. Here’s a little tutorial on how to style a top knot bun.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Hair Styler (I use Alikay Naturals Aloe Berry Styling Gel)
  • Hair tie
  • Hair Brush (toothbrush, optional)
  • Bobby pins

STEP-BY-STEP

The trick to achieving a sleek, top knot bun is to create it on stretched hair. I personally stretch my hair by doing a braid out or twist out. But you can also do a bantu knot out or lightly blow dry your hair to elongate your curls. In this stretched state your hair will be much easier to work with because there is less frizz to deal with and less tangles.

So I start by applying a hair butter like Alikay Naturals Shea Yogurt to my hair. Then I proceed to doing chunky two-strand twists or braids. That night I’ll put my twists in a satin bonet and then off to bed I go.

The following morning I unravel the twists/braids. Then with the use of just my fingers, I flip my hair forward and gather my hair in a high bun. In order to get my edges laid, I smooth on the Aloe Berry Styling Gel with my fingers and use my fingertips to smooth down any curls and bumps.

When it comes to creating a topknot, placement is key. Your bun should sit flat on the top of your head. That said, I then take my soft bristle brush and gently brush my hair straight-upwards to get that sleek and smooth effect. Once my hair has been smoothed down to my liking I pull all my hair upward and secure with a goody ouchless band.  how-to-top-knot-bun-ninja-bun-natural-curly-kinky-hair-tutorial-pictorial-natashaleeds-stylishlee

Next I divide my hair into two parts and take these two sections and loosely twist together. Then I loosely twist my hair around to form the bun. Not too tight though as you want the bun to show some texture while still appearing voluminous. Finally pin in place with bobby pins and finish by using a toothbrush to slay those baby hairs.

There you have it. Now you know how I’ve been able to rock my top knot bun all summer long. Oh & by the way, as long as I tie my hair up at night and keep my ends moisturized, I can rock this style for roughly a week.

I hope you found this little tutorial helpful. Talk Soon. Nuff Love, Natasha ♥

Hey! 🙂 Your hair grows so fast, do you use any special vitamin or anything? or is it just in the genes?

Hey hun. So funny that you asked that. I actually was on the Mane Choice Vitamins for 3 months and I’ll be writing a post very soon sharing my thoughts. But I do think it has much to do with Genes and my hair care practices (like scalp massages using oils)

Oh lol nice, I tried with castor oil on my scalp for a while but I don’t religiously oil my scalp x_x I’ll be on the look out for that 🙂
