Happy 53rd, to my beautiful home—Jamaica! A small island in the Caribbean where the land is green, the sun shines abundantly and the people are resilient, welcoming, creative and most indomitable in spirit. Exactly 53 years ago today, Jamaica gained its independence from the United Kingdom, and I can’t think of a better excuse for a celebration! So guess what, pop open a red stripe or get the rum ready, break out the reggae and dancehall and light up a birthday candle in honor of Jamaica’s 53 years as an independent nation.
As Buju Banton sang in his hit single, “it’s not an easy road”…. Jamaica certainly has had its fair share of obstacles to overcome and even though we have overcome so much we still have a long way to go. We have gone through so much over the past 53 years, yet still we wave our black, green and gold flag proudly. Despite my countries hardships, today is one of those days I’ll pass on speaking of unemployment, political strife, poverty or violence. Instead, I’m celebrating the fact that my small island is known in every corner of the globe for our diverse, innovative and rich culture, vibrant spirit, glorious music and for our “full belly” food.
We are a country that symbolizes excellence, and this is something that we have proven to the world time and time again. So to all my Jamaicans out there, wherever you are in the world, wave your flag high today and wear your colors proudly, because today we must inspire the greater world and uphold the legacy that the architects of independent Jamaica paved. Let’s propel excellence to come forward and continue to reconstruct the social and economic society and life of Jamaica.
Okay so you know I had to share my outfit with you right? I’m keeping this short and to the point because I should be helping in the kitchen right now lol. Today at my family’s home we are having a family dinner in celebration of our countries independence. Oh & YES! I Natasha Lee gets dressed up from time to time even when the only people seeing me at home are my parents lol.
So today I wanted my outfit to be inspired by the colors from the Jamaican flag. The problem is, our colors are Black, Green & Gold (more like yellow), and when I think of those colors into an outfit, the first thing that pops into my head is color blocking. If you’ve been following me for some time then you would know by now that I love to color-match rather than color-block. So instead lets just say this outfit is inspired by my country in general and not so much the colors of the flag lol.
I wore a palm print midi skirt, in an ombre of greens and married it with a denim bustier I purchased from H&M. Although the tropical palm-tree print lends a playful feel to the slim fit and slightly conservative pencil, I went casual on top with denim to counterbalance the outfit. I call it…juxtaposing sophistication with a bit of street at its best haha! Oh & by the way, if you look closely there are hints of yellow found in my statement necklace. So I sort of still stuck to the colors of the Jamaican flag. If the specs of yellow in the necklace wasn’t enough, then check out the yellow buildings behind me haha! #NailedIt
Have a great day everyone & as always thank you for stopping by. Nuff Love, Natasha ♥
