Hey Style Leeders! I’m back & today I’m sharing with you what I wore to the Ocean Style Fashion Showcase that was held last Saturday. For the event I showed off my style wearing a form fitting, baby-blue, patent leather high waisted skirt from Signature 78 and paired it with a cool grey, loose fit, textured sweater top. I added a statement silver necklace to showcase some attitude, a deep red lip for a little more edge and black, ankle-strap stiletto heels from Stuart Wietzman to finish off my look.
I truly felt like a fashion queen that night. Not only was my sleek fit skirt garnering tons of attention from designers, reporters and other attendees but I was able to wear a fall inspired outfit because this was an indoor event!!! For all those who did not know, it’s still ridiculously hot here in Jamaica and for the most part, big events are almost always held outdoors making it difficult to wear even a “sort-of” fall look. But the creators of Ocean Style must have heard my cries and held the fashion show indoors at the Montego Bay Convention Center where the rooms are cold not even cool. SCORE!!!
Ocean Style Fashion Showcase
The Good, the Bad, & well…the Amusing
Unfortunately, we can’t always win! The Ocean Style Fashion Showcase wrapped up last weekend and sadly it has received less than favorable reviews and I completely understand why. To start off on a positive note the venue was beautifully set up and it was nice and cool (haha! inside joke if you’re a loyal StylishLee reader). I must say the lighting, the runway and just the overall layout was spectacular. Nonetheless, even with a lovely venue, people who have been attending this event for some time now all have made similar comments about preference of the previous Ocean Style venues. In the past the venues were intimate, cozy and comfortable as opposed to a convention center which I do agree can be a bit impersonal and cold.
Now the event start time was 8pm and being the early bird that I am my friends and I arrived on time and to our surprise we were among the first set of guests to arrive. Sadly we were told we couldn’t take our seats because the event was running a bit late and they were still setting up (raises eyebrows and releases a big sigh). I must admit this was quite alarming but look I was in an awesome mood and I felt fabulous. Plus, with the chunk of time that we now had before the venue filled up and the event actually kicked off we munched away on tasty finger foods and sipped cocktails while chit chatting with one another. OH, & we also used this free time to snap loads of pics of each other—good way to make up time if you ask me haha.
Okay so the fashion show didn’t start until some time after 10:00pm!!! Unforgivably late to many but by this time I was full from eating basically an entire platter of vegetable spring rolls and red wine so in my eyes I was having the time of my life. I was just eager and very excited for the collections to hit the runway and sadly this is where things became a bit unsettling for me. Well…the fashion show and the designers, they were very – err – interesting. Myself along with many other fashion enthusiasts and designers present were unimpressed by the four designers that night. In terms of the collection itself, there was nothing at all that felt revolutionary instead it was quite underwhelming.
The collections demonstrated mediocre designs, odd choice of fabrics, ill fitting clothing, lack of attention to detail, lack of cohesiveness, questionable theatrics by some of the models and bad makeup. Now don’t get me wrong there were a FEW pieces that I did like and some wow’d me here and there but when a designer has 12+ pieces in a collection I expect to like or at least find interesting most of the pieces from the collection. Unfortunately from each collection there were only 2 or 3 things I liked and even then these pieces didn’t scream ‘BUY ME NOW! (will have pics below of my fave looks from each collection).
Thank goodness for the entertainment! Jamaican comedian and social media sensation Quite Perry put on quite the show to help elevate our moods and lighten the atmosphere up a bit. Nonetheless the show ended briefly after and the mood in the audience was, well—very flat. Perhaps because the show started 2 hours late and then ended before any of us could even have a second drink. Luckily the MC announced that the venue was about to open up into a dance floor where we could mix, mingle and dance the night away with top-notch celebrities and gorgeous models. Unfortunately I was unable to stay for this because I had another event to attend and I haven’t heard much from anyone who went to the after party so I can’t say whether is was a YAY or NAY!
Well there you have it. Drawing the curtains on another relatively lovely event by Ocean Style. I do think overall it was a lovely mix between fashion, beautiful people and jaw dropping venues and I tip my hat to the creators of Ocean Style for bringing this rich event back to Montego Bay year after but I do believe some tweaking needs to be done. I expect events of this nature to get better and better each year but unfortunately this is perhaps my least impressed year. Nonetheless I have been attending the Ocean Style Fashion Showcase for several years and I do believe they will improve where they fell short for next year. Peak below for my top picks from each collection:
